In 2004, I was granted the opportunity to serve as a security department intern at the Democratic National Convention just before the beginning of my senior year at Boston College. After months of preparation work (i.e. doing all kinds of random tasks for the senior staff of the DNC Security staff), I finally received my convention day assignments: to serve as the deputy to the convention floor security manager. Yes, I DO know that this doesn’t sound incredibly interesting; however, it ultimately gave me the opportunity to roam freely through just about every corridor of the convention hall (then known as the Fleet Center) and literally gave me a front row seat to the event that launched the national political career of America’s 44th President.

Standing near the base of his podium, just outside the press pen of eager photographers, I had an opportunity to hear Barack Obama’s powerful keynote address. However, unlike most of the convention attendees, I witnessed this historic moment from a unique vantage point that allowed me to direct my focus to the audience and not the evening’s keynote speaker. Looking out into the convention hall, I had the opportunity to witness the overwhelming excitement amongst the faces of tens of thousands of delegates, party leaders, and activists as Barack Obama introduced himself to America. At the same time, I also shared the communal feeling with everyone in the room that – on this particular night – we were experiencing something extraordinary.

I have never felt a room as energized or as optimistic as I experienced on the evening of Tuesday, July 27, 2004 and, for better or worse, that feeling has been etched into my heart ever since. This experience later manifested itself as a passion which shifted my perception of politics from beyond that of a potential interest/practical college major to the overall focus of my professional career. It was the emotional spark provided by the DNC coupled with my early experiences with political activism and the process of institutional change that I experienced at Boston College which helped me identify politics as the most viable method through which I could effectively serve my community and put my skill set to use. I didn’t really know how but I certainly knew that the best place to start was my university community.

At the conclusion of my junior year, I was honored by my fellow undergraduates with the opportunity to serve as the Vice President of the Undergraduate Government and spent the majority of my Senior year co-coordinating ongoing efforts to help Boston College develop into a more inclusive university community. My experience in the Undergraduate Government offered an opportunity for immense personal growth as my colleagues and I struggled to help a University community progress while addressing its immediate needs to reconcile tradition and Catholic teachings with the issues of racial inclusion, religious expression, and sexual orientation.

At the conclusion of my undergraduate career, I was accepted as a fellow at the Coro Center for Civic Leadership in San Francisco. Although I was more than 2,800 miles away from my childhood home in Upper Marlboro, MD, the Coro Fellows Program in Public Affairs helped me make a smooth transition to life on the west coast. Through a rigorous curriculum and expansive series of job placements, the program provided me with an invaluable introduction to Bay Area politics – as well as the ambitious promise of civic engagement.

I have been working in Bay Area politics ever since and – over the past three years – I have had the pleasure of working on local campaigns, staffing a member of the California legislature, and working at a leading Bay Area public affairs firm. Despite the fact that each of these experiences has helped me carefully refine my professional skills as a political operative, none of these experiences helped me recapture the sense of purpose that I felt just a few years before.

At the same time, Barack Obama’s candidacy continued to surge and I became increasingly frustrated with the feeling that I had navigated away from the career path that was more aligned with my individual principles. It had become evident to me that I had become distracted by the prospects of financial success, and a complacency that was fueled by the fear of uncertainty. Deep down, I knew that I was ignoring an urge to chase a dream that was becoming more difficult to reach each day. I wanted to work on the Obama Campaign and help elect a man to the highest political office in the land who I wholeheartedly believed would not only restore faith in the democratic process but would help lead our country toward a more perfect union.

Thankfully, with the help of a very special person in my life, I was given that opportunity in September of 2008. I hastily jumped in my eleven year old car and drove from San Francisco to Calhoun County, Michigan. I had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to help organize a community that was longing for a change and was hit incredibly hard economically. Despite the challenges many of the campaign volunteers faced – whether it was insufficient access to health care, daughters and sons fighting multiple tours in Iraq, the prospect of being laid-off from a job at a local auto parts manufacturer, or facing the devastating reality that their pensions were lost in the collapse of the stock market – they never once stopped fighting for what they believed in. Each of them deserves as much credit for the staggering results on November 4, 2008 as the candidate.

As President-Elect Obama continues to fill out his cabinet, I have made the difficult decision to leave my position at Barbary Coast Consulting, apply for a position in the Obama/Biden administration, and return home to the Washington, DC area. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the Obama/Biden transition website, www.change.gov, has received roughly 331,000 job applications for approximately 3,000 positions. Thereby, the chance that I will get an opportunity to share my story with someone who has the power to offer me employment within the administration are slim to none. With that said, instead of waiting for a venue to share my desire and passion for such an opportunity, I decided to create my own.

So, with a little urging from my boss, I have chosen to share my story with the whole world. Of course, the most obvious anticipated question from readers will be some form of: “will this really work?” The short answer is “I don’t know” – but there is only one way to find out.

Stay tuned for more…and, to friends, family, and supporters, feel free to leave a comment and/or words of encouragement below.

God Bless You

It has been my distinct good fortune and my pleasure to employ Burnell Holland for the past two years. I hired Burnell in mid-2006 for a project at my public affairs firm, and after observing his integrity, penchant for hard work, diplomatic ability, and remarkable intellect, I offered him a permanent position with my team.

Burnell is one of the most talented and confidence-inspiring people I’ve ever met. When I met him, he was 23. Though he’d completed the prestigious Coro Fellowship in Public Affairs, has worked on a political campaign and in a government office, and had served as class Vice-President at Boston College, I did not expect to this young man to be such a mature analyst and serve as such a wise counselor to me and others on my team. I was wrong.

Burnell has a remarkable sense of ethical propriety – something that I find is all too rare for someone who works in advocacy and politics. Our clients are fans of his, he is a natural leader in our office, and he is regularly the person who turns off the lights and locks up our office, because he’s the last one of the ten of us to leave.

When Burnell was offered an opportunity to serve the Obama/Biden campaign in Michigan, I granted him a leave of absence. This caused me no small amount of grief with my clients, who were unhappy with his departure. However, he reminded me of me back in ’92, when I was 25 and had the chance to work on the Clinton/Gore campaign – and eventually went to Washington, DC to work at HUD under Secretary Cisneros. The opportunity to work for something that quite literally changes the direction of the world is a rare one, and Burnell was bursting at the seams to work hard on this amazing, history-altering campaign. (And the day Burnell left for Michigan, McCain pulled out of that state. Coincidence? I think not.)

Now that the campaign has ended, Mr. Holland has a new goal, one that I am torn about. He wants to serve the President; he wants to return to the coast where his family and his roots can be found, he wants to return to public service. I am sad that I will soon lose one of the most talented members of my team; I am sad that yet another remarkable African-American will leave San Francisco – a city that has seen a tremendous diminishment of its African-American population in recent decades – and I will miss working every day with one of the most personable, intelligent, remarkable humans I have run across. (And, despite all his gifts, one of the most humble.)

As the Obama administration puts together a team to lead our nation out of crisis, to restore faith in government, to move us many steps further towards a post-racial society, to right past wrongs and encourage all of us to take responsibility for ourselves and our actions, I am confident that they will not find a better colleague than Burnell Holland. Ethical, forceful, tireless, team-oriented, and oh so remarkably wise beyond his years, he epitomizes to me what the Obama campaign has represented.

I will miss Burnell Holland terribly when he leaves our small firm – and I will celebrate like a madman if this amazing American is added to the incredible team of leaders that are being formed to lead our nation towards a better day.

    Thank you for your consideration.

    Alex Clemens

  2. In the time I have worked with Burnell, he has been nothing short of a wonderful teammate, a kind mentor, and an inspiring individual. We will miss him at Barbary Coast, but we also look forward to his great journey ahead.

Burnell is hands-down one of the most dedicated, loyal, and creative individuals with which I have had the pleasure to work. The addition of Burnell to the Barbary Coast staff brought an infusion of energy and knowledge that helped our small firm continue up the ladder of success.

During his tenure here, his background in both politics and the community were instrumental in helping us secure wins for our clients. As he worked for corporations, government agencies, and non-profits, I watched as his skills sharpened and his leadership style came into its own.

Despite the often tiresome work with which he was involved, somehow Burnell was able to work through it with a smile permanently stamped on his face. I’m still not sure how he does it, and I’m beginning to think I’ll never be able to replicate his abundant enthusiasm or his ability to energize those around him. It’s just something about him that defies explanation, and that you can only truly appreciate if you work with him.

If you are looking to hire Burnell, trust that he will become an indispensible part of your team. I know we are saddened to see him leave, but remain inspired by his will to accomplish great things.

  4. Barbary Coast’s loss is Barack’s - and the country’s - gain. Someone in DC, please give this man a job!

As a colleague, I have watched Burnell Holland III continue to show his dedication as a public servant. He is one of the most politically driven young men I have ever met. His political crusade began in high school where he held a prestigious post as Student council president. As he continues to progress through his life he has become more diligent in making America a better place thorough bridging the gap between the community and the private sector. He will forever be a life long public servant.

If you are looking to hire a young dedicated and driven individual who truly believes that it is time for change he is the perfect candidate. He has accomplished so much in such a short time.

Burnell is a true professional and very passionate about his work. While at Barbary Coast, he worked to build coalitions with community organizations, assisted a city agency with implementing new ordinances that affected business owners across San Francisco, and served as Editor In Chief of San Francisco’s political homepage: http://www.sfusualsuspects.com. Burnell is a leader, as well as a team player who inspires everyone around him.

It was an honor and a pleasure to work alongside Burnell at Barbary Coast, and though I am sad to see him leave the West Coast, I know that he can greatly contribute to the overall success of the Obama administration.

Burnell E. Holland III is a man who possesses exemplary professional traits and political adeptness. Looking through the impressive narrative of his accomplishments detailed above , it is evident that Burnell has worked his tail off in a variety of environments to fine tune his policy analysis, community outreach, and communications skills. Part of what makes Burnell such an effective leader is innate – he has a natural warmth and emotional intelligence that serves him well when working with people.

Please hire this man, before someone else does. People like him do not come along often, and I am both privileged and honored to have worked by his side at Barbary Coast Consulting.

Burnell has dedication, intelligence, creativity and heart. He has the ability to make people smile when they are frustrated or seemingly defeated. He knows how to get people energized and focused on a common goal. What Obama promised our country will take a lot of hard work and passion; and that is exactly what Burnell Holland would bring to the table.

I have had the distinct pleasure of volunteering alongside Burnell on many a campaign, in addition to being an object of his lobbying while at City Hall.

Burnell is a unique combination of ability, aptitude, and determination. AND all this talent is wrapped up in one of the warmest, most engaging, and caring personalities that I know. This is a loss not only for his firm but for San Francisco.

Although sad to see Burnell go, I’m happy that he has chosen to go back to public service. Anyone is lucky to have Burnell working on their side, and if we’re fortunate, he’ll be working on ours for the Obama administration!

    Give that man a job!!

Burnell. Holland. Remember that name folks. This young man has potential coming out of his ears. He’s passionate and smart, he works like a dog, and he’s genuinely a joy to be around. Obama Administration, this is your guy.

In the time I’ve worked at Barbary Coast Consulting, I have been nothing short of amazed by Burnell’s intelligence, work ethic, and dedication to his job. Even after he made the decision to follow his heart and head to Washington, Burnell has remained a committed, over-achieving part of our team, and still gives 110% to all of our clients, every single day.

I’m also struck by our clients’ rave reviews of Mr. Holland; without fail, everyone who speaks of Burnell does so in glowing terms. He knows what he’s doing: he’s smart, capable, creative, flexible, and able to adapt and succeed under any circumstance. He is clearly an asset to our firm, and I know he will be an asset to wherever he lands next. The real question is what we’re going to do without him around here…

Burnell is a dedicated leader. He’s confident and pragmatic, assertive and hard-working. He inspires people and gets the job done. I would not want to be up against him in Washington.

What a treasure of a man. Burnell, you will be missed in the Bay Area.

  13. He was a Coro Fellow. What more do you need to know? Send this man to Washington D.C.!

Burnell is charming, down to earth, engaging and clever. Aside from the myriad of accomplishments and professional credentials which overwhelmingly qualify him to serve this country and this new administration, Burnell is simply a delight to spend time with. And how many brilliant geniuses can you say that about?

  15. There are far too many corrosive influences in the world of politics, and too many good, idealistic young people have either been corrupted or turned off. This is even more true in the field of professional advocacy, where money and the art of the deal often take prominence over the welfare everyday people.

It is with this understanding, that I encourage you to provide a forum for Burnell Holland, a hard-working and dedicated person who has spent the last year serving the Obama campaign and has committed
himself to serving the Obama Administration.

In San Francisco, where I serve in my third term as a county Supervisor, our courage of convictions is as important as our political outlook. Burnell has built a solid reputation as a progressive professional who has integrity, intensity, strong loyalty, a sense of humor, and an unwavering work ethic.

In his various roles in campaigns and in advocacy, Burnell has had success being both forceful and diplomatic. He’s worked to maintain and improve SF Usual Suspects, a San Francisco political news website that I (along with most of the City’s political community) rely on to remain up-to-date on the latest happenings in local politics. As an early and ardent supporter of the Obama campaign myself, I observed Burnell’s efforts on behalf of the campaign in California and heard about his achievements in Michigan, and I believe he served the campaign well.

I have also gotten to know Burnell beyond the field of legislative advocacy and political work and can attest that his wisdom and maturity dwarf his years.

With the historic challenges we face today, our President-elect and his team need to quickly assemble an extraordinary group of intelligent, tenacious and selfless public servants to carry out their agenda. If granted an opportunity to be part of the team, I am confident that Burnell Holland will well serve his President and his country.

    In Solidarity,

I almost don’t want to do this, because it means the Bay Area loses big time! I met Burnell within my first days at work. It may have been my 2nd day on the job. My company has a proposed condo project here in San Francisco, and we work with Barbary Coast to help us through the challenges this wonderful city throws at us.

Burnell has been one of the main Barbary Coaster’s working with us, therefore him and I have worked pretty closely together for the past 20 months. It is almost impossible to put into words how amazing he is. Burnell is a team player, a supportive friend, and an amazing person all around. Him and I have worked on extensive community outreach together, from community meetings to door to door community walks. He is always organized, excited, prepared, willing and able to support us how ever we need him. I always knew I could pick up the phone and count on him to attend a meeting last minute, provide me with info, or come through with anything else I needed to help make me and our project a success.

It saddens me to write this because this means I won’t be knocking on doors or attending meetings with Burnell. It does mean, however, that Burnell is moving on to fufill a dream, and that makes this ok. I am so grateful for the short time I was able to work with Burnell, and know that he would be excellent in anything he sets his mind to.

His future is in the hands of others now, and I admire that he has the confidence and excitement in him to fulfill this dream. He has been an asset to Barbary Coast, and the bay area in general, and I hope the east coast and the President -Elect Obama appreciate his “awesomeness.”

While I do not know Burnell as much as I wish I did, his passion and dedication are evident through both his work and character. I am absolutely confident in his abilities, and recommend him for any position in Washington, DC!

  18. Burnell is smart, capable, an excellent staffer, has a strong reputation in San Francisco, and even though he works at a firm that has everything going for it, D.C. is the place where he can really make a difference/change.

  19. I have known Burnell Holland since the 8th grade. When I first met Burnell, I would say he didn’t have strong political aspirations. But as Burnell has grown and matured into a man, his political acumen and aspirations grown with him. The great thing about Burnell is that as he has broadened his political horizons, his purpose in politics has remained the same; to be an agent of positive change. I’ve seen Burnell pursue his ideals in every place he has lived in, on whatever level he’s been able to. From Bethesda, to Boston to San Francisco, Burnell has honed his skills, and been able to make a positive impact. Being exposed to the political process would be enough jade and make a cynic of anyone, but Burnell has remained steadfast in his beliefs, and his approach. Burnell is the utter epitome of “a change we can believe in“, and would make more than a fine addition to the Obama team in whatever capacity he is asked to serve.

Burnell Holland worked for our union for six weeks as a CORO fellow. He is one of six CORO fellows we have had.
Burnell was one of the most outgoing, conscientious, and intelligent of all the people who have come into our lives through the CORO door. It was a great pleasure having him with us. He adds luster to all he touches.

When there’s a will, there’s a way — especially when it’s combined with great talent and, as my mother would say, “personality plus.” Burnell Holland is heading to Washington for all the right reasons and has an enormous contribution to make. Affording him the opportunity to further the goals of the new Administration would be a wonderful thing for all of us.

Burnell’s idealism is inspiring - he is exactly the kind of person who should be part of an administration that has caused so many to watch in wonder as the gap begins to close between the reality of America and her promise. I’ve only met Burnell Holland briefly but was impressed, as one cannot fail to be, by his humanity, his intelligence, his compassion and his energy. Make his dream a reality and make San Francisco’s loss the nation’s gain.

Its been an honor and a priviledge to know Mr. Holland. Burnell and I first met at Boston College in 2001 where I was assigned to serve as his mentor in the AHANA Leadership Academy (ALA). ALA is the training ground for the future leaders of student government at BC.

Burnell came to me with much experience from high school as did much of the ALA mentees. The difference between Burnell and many of them is his sense of humility. Although there is only a year age difference between the two of us, he was very humble and respectful of my experience as a student leader at BC and was very eager to learn more about the system of government at BC.

In addition to humility, Burnell also has a worldview that encompasses the masses. During his time in the undergraduate government his administration implemented many initatives that closed the barriers that separate in an effort to unite people. As Politcal Science majors, we would be in classes in which Burnell would inquire about the greater impact govenment has on its citizens and the world at large. This worldview is what made Burnell a great candidate for membership in Iota Phi Theta Fraternity Inc. where he continues to do the work of the humble servant.

As an Army officer, minister, and counselor, I feel very confident in recommending Burnell Holland for employment in the Obama/Biden Adminstration. His humility, sincerity and worldview will have a great impact in the Obama/Biden administration.

Because I have been fortunate enough to know Mr. Burnell Holland for an extended period of time, allow me to give you my perspective of Who He Is. Rarely will you come across an individual who exemplifies what a true leader, friend, and confidant should be. Allow me to unselfishly paint a picture of Mr. Burnell Holland so that you too will have the chance to gain a great leader, friend, confidant, and great inspiration.

A smiling face and friendly disposition, a solid foundation built upon civic morals and family values, a reliable resource, a personal coach and educator, a listener, strong work ethic, drive and motivation – these are just a few of the things that first come to mind when I think of Burnell. I am in a position to make these claims, because I was fortunate enough to spend my high school years with Burnell and still have him as a friend today.

My first true glimpse into Who He Is was when I worked with him side-by-side as he led our class as Student Council President. He just seemed to naturally fit into that role; it seemed almost to be second nature to me. Between running meetings and helping to run the school, student trials and student-led events, speeches and presentations, Burnell was in his element from day one. I can confidently say that our entire student body had complete faith in Burnell’s to lead our school and that assurance was confirmed after Burnell completed his service so successfully.

In picking someone as an employee, especially in a position that serves the public, it is important to find someone who you can give a task to and know that that task will be completed in a comprehensive and timely manner, with particular attention to detail and conduct while completing that task. What you are ultimately looking for is a good PERSON, not just a good employee; Burnell is one of the best people that I know. Luckily for you, not only is he a great person, but he has the experience to back it up.

It would be a pleasure to see my friend, my brother, my confidant get even closer to realizing his dreams and potential. The administration will benefit greatly from adding Burnell, I put EVERYTHING on it.

Thank you for your time and consideration,

I worked with Burnell in several capacities at Boston College and he truly is a great human being, one that I am proud to call my friend. Burnell is impressive on so many levels. His passion for justice is unmatched, his work-ethic is incredible, and his ability to connect with people is extraordinary. Burnell Holland is the definition of a dedicated public servant. He is a team player who puts ego aside and always has the goals of the greater good in mind. It has been an absolute pleasure to work with Burnell at Barbary Coast. We all have great hopes and dreams for the new Obama administration and what it might achieve. I’ve never met Burnell Holland, but I enthusiastically recommend him for any job in the Obama administration that requires a sharp mind, political savvy, a solid grasp of urban economics, excellent communication skills, a strong work ethic, and a passion for social justice. Reasons: I’ve been very impressed by his achievements as editor in chief of the SF Usual Suspects website — the best website on urban politics and public policy I have seen anywhere in the country. Further, Burnell has gained essential experience and honed his talents working for one of the most advanced and sophisticated political consulting firms in the nation’s vanguard city of urban progressivism. Finally, colleagues whose opinions I trust and respect speak highly of Burnell and have complete confidence in his ability to do a great job on the national stage and to serve our country well. He’s clearly one of the best and the brightest, and I hope Obama’s talent scouts will notice him and give him the opportunity to show what he can do.

Those of us who choose a life in the political sphere tend to be a sorry bunch. Far too often, our ranks are filled with shameless social-climbers, desperate for a whiff of the halls of power, sociopathic bullies who view themselves as ancient gladiators wielding their petty power against those who have slighted them, and of course college drunks who couldn’t land a degree in a real major.

Burnell Holland is a glaring exception to this rule. Intelligent, dedicated, and utterly unflappable, I am certain that there is no one he can’t charm and nothing that he can’t handle. It would be fitting for a man of his caliber to be a part of this new White House as it leads our nation back into greatness.

I know of Burnell Holland through his superb work as Editor In Chief of UsualSuspects, his Coro Fellowship in Public Affairs and his outstanding reputation in San Francisco’s political community. The Obama administration, like any new administration, will need talented, ethical, inspiring, high quality, team players like Burnell Holland. As a past chairman of the S.F. Republican Party, a past city commissioner appointed by Mayor Brown, Mayor Newsom, and a current state commissioner appointed by Governor Schwarzenegger, I am pleased to commend him and hope he will be appointed.

I think my perspective is unique amongst the rest of these comments. While many of these people have worked with Burnell or been clients of his, I have interned under his command. Working for Burnell has been what I would consider exponentially important in building skills I see as necessary for a future I hope will emulate his, and only wish he could be a permanent fixture in my life.

Burnell has the ability to grasp arcane and complex problems and then dictate instructions to solve them in the most concise and basic verbiage. He has never once let the stress from his mounting responsibilities spill over into his delegation to me. I have seen Burnell at maximum capacity, with work coming in from every possible angle, yet he was still able to take the time to clearly dictate precise instructions to me; this is because he knows what I am capable of. It was as if, upon meeting me, Burnell knew exactly what to expect out of me. He never assigned me more work than I was capable of, but never gave me anything that took less than my best effort. I lend this to Burnell’s uncanny ability to read people, to acknowledge their strong suits and weak points within moments.

I have witnessed Burnell work with other people, and I can say his teamwork is something I can only wish to achieve. I never once saw him dodge accountability for anything that hasn’t gone the right way (which happens), even when it was clearly not his responsibility. Simultaneously, I have never seen Burnell graciously accept remarks of gratitude or thanks without deferring them to the people who he works with. This is all a testament to Burnell’s disposition; he is an astonishing team player because he has no ego, he is gracious, and above all else he is a friend to everyone.

D.C. needs someone like Burnell. When we look to people in the public sector we look for judiciousness, intelligence, celestial work ethic, and of a course the “it” factor. Burnell has all these qualities, but what is the “it” factor?

Burnell has the “it” factor because: he will grind his fingers to the bone for you, because he will come up with the solutions no one else could, because he will approach convoluted situation and return with lucid instructions clearly detailing what you should do for no other reason than to make things better for you, because Burnell will be more than your friend, Burnell will be your family, he will be your brother.

    Sincerely,

Burnell is bound to succeed at anything to which he directs his dedication and skills. I hope the Obama transition team brings him on board and allows his energy and passion to have the same amazing impact on our federal government as it has had in the lives of all the people you see posting on this website. Burnell is intelligent, conscientious, patient, direct, and loyal. He brings care and intensity to all that he does and he wants nothing more than to see President-elect Barack Obama and this country fulfill a greater destiny than the one we have moving towards these last few years. I feel privileged to have him in my life and only wish our leaders, our government, and our world could be a bit more like him.

Having been a Coro Fellow in Public Affairs alongside Burnell I got to see the many facets of who he is. He is a great leader, teammate, evaluator, and friend. In the Fellows program we had an opportunity to challenge each other and a responsibility to push each other to grow to develop better leaders for tomorrow and Burnell embraced the essence of the program by both learning from feedback he received and by supporting those around him. I have a great respect for Burnell’s commitment to public service and his love for all things political. I believe that Burnell’s commitment to service and the moral grounding he has would make him an excellent addition to the Obama administration.

I know Burnell as the Editor in Chief of online political periodical entitled “The Usual Suspects.” Through this publication, I have seen Burnell’s intelligence, knowledge, compassion, and integrity. Those are some of the qualities that we have seen throughout the Obama/Biden campaign and we will continue seeing in their administration. Those qualities can do a great deal in serving an administration that attempts to take on the task of leading us toward a more perfect union and therefore Burnell needs to be a part of the Obama administration. Even though, it is a great loss to the Bay Area it is an extraordinary gain for the country.

Burnell would be an invaluable asset to the Obama administration. In the time I’ve known Burnell through working together and in friendship, I have found him to be honest, loyal, a man of integrity, self-analytical, thoughtful, perceptive, positive, charismatic, and kind. His dedication to this campaign and now administration is respected and admired by many. He has genuine passion and commitment to the values this campaign promoted, and the hope this administration brings. He would be an extraordinary addition to the administration.

Burnell is a paragon of dedication, enthusiasm and leadership. I am grateful to have had the experience of completing the Coro Center for Civic Leadership’s Fellows Program in Public Affairs with Burnell, being able to exchange ideas, learn from his example and feedback, and watch him build the foundation for his successful early career. Burnell is immensely competent and respected amongst his peers. I have often been inspired by his example, and I have complete confidence in his ability to serve the Obama administration and the public in the highest capacity.

When I first came across Burnell Holland, it was during a crisis. I had no way of knowing then what I know now: that in a firefight, Burnell Holland is articulate, smart, and tough. His quick wit, his actions, his help, went miles beyond what I’d expected, but as I’ve learned, was simply par for his course.

Burnell is one of the few willing to put aside a comfortable life and solid career path to pursue his passion. He’s already demonstrated that commitment through his work for the Obama campaign. Give him to opportunity to exercise his abundant skills for the Obama administration and you won’t be disappointed.

In addition to being a natural strategic thinker, Burnell intuitively understands the power of human relationships. He navigates them with ease and stay true to himself–all while inspiring others to work with him to achieve great things.

On a number of difficult occasions during the Coro Fellows Program in Public Affairs, I have seen him reach out to others to draw out new ideas, achieve consensus among a larger group, and keep discussions focused on the group’s mission. Burnell would be an excellent member of any team that has large, complex problems to solve.

The Obama administration is Burnell’s ideal next step. It is a natural fit–he needs them, and they need him. Burnell would bring his whole self to his role, including his intellect, integrity, and passion for Obama’s vision of change.

Finally, I will echo what many others on this blog have alluded to: Burnell inspires trust. He will stick with you to through the worst of times, and if you have earned his friendship, then he will bring an incredible array of knowledge, tools, and insight to your team.

Barack: this is your man. Come and get him.

Talented. Authentic. Strategic. Dedicated. Burnell is all this and so much more. He is a bridge builder, capable of hearing multiple view points, withholding judgment, challenging assumptions, and serving as a translator between people or institutions seemingly at odds with one another. He can find creative solutions by bringing out the best ideas in others and bringing people together. There is something so genuine about Burnell- his warmth and passion are contagious- he easily gains the trust and respect of those around him.

We in San Francisco will miss his talent and energy, but as self-important as we can be, we know there is a bigger calling for Burnell’s contribution.

Burnell Holland has become a trusted participant in San Francisco’s journalistic family. We applaud him because he contributes and he cares. With each issue of Usual Suspects it is clear he cares about the issues and about the people in San Francisco politics. It is also clear he is a contributor to raising the standards for journalism in the Bay Area. He will make similar contributions in the Obama administration. That is a win for the Obama administration, for the people of the bay area and for all Americans.

If Burnell were looking for a job at my school, I would put him at the top of any pile of candidates based on his work ethic, intelligence, sense of humor, appreciation of the diverse voices surrounding him, and sense of decorum. I have worked with him directly in our important effort to reach out to our neighbors about a current important construction project. Without exception, Burnell has interacted with each of them with the utmost and honest respect and forthrightness. He has guided me in my efforts with an assurance that belies his youth. Indeed, I am a better ambassador for my school because of his insights and comments. I have to believe that our governmental agencies would be sounder, more responsive and positively accountable if they were staffed with people like Burnell. I’ve been graced with the opportunity to work on the Usual Suspects website. My task is to upgrade and update it with the newest technology; a task that has been greatly eased by Burnell’s prior work and dedication to the site. His insightfulness and technological prowess has given me a site to work with that is hugely superior to its predecessors. His vision transformed it into an easy to use, well organized and thoughtful experience for the readers of the SF Usual Suspects. His combined expertise in politics and technology oversaw the evolution of an outstanding political website. I believe Burnell to be an outstanding human being in all facets of his work and life, and an excellent candidate for a position in the Obama administration.

  59. Burnell is a kind and warm soul, someone who can flow through politics with ease all the while remaining humble. DC will be honored to have him as a new resident.

I had the distinct honor of being Burnell’s fellow Fellow during the year long Fellowship in Public Affairs at the Coro Center for Civic Leadership. Over the course of the year he distinguished himself as a political expert in a group of politically engaged individuals. He wound up choosing, as his individual project, creating the election day strategy for one of the hardest-fought California (and ultimately victorious) state senate races. He then moved onto the elite San Francisco political consulting firm.

Yet Burnell is more than politics. He is also passion. At that firm he found a way to get those who were politically engaged to also give charitably. As Fellows, he was constantly encouraging us to give back and was always conscious of his effect on the broader community. But, you know, there is just something about those African American community organizers who simply love their cities and turn down well paying gigs to do what is right.

Burnell is the man to put his money where his mouth is, as well. He went to Michigan when it would have been easier to stay in San Francisco. He is there for his friends and for his country when it needs him. I wish him the best; our country needs people with passion, intellect, and commitment to correct its course, and Burnell would greatly add to that mission.

I have had the pleasure of knowing Burnell since he was in the seventh grade. I have always admired his willingness to help others and to do what is right even if it is not popular.

Burnell was a young boy with character and has grown into a man with character. I am proud to know Burnie, as my family and I affectionately call him, and am honored to let others know that Burnell is fine man and would be a great asset to this new administration.

I am an attorney in San Francisco and I have worked with Burnell on many occasions. I have been very impressed by his intelligence, positive attitude, energy and attention to detail. He has been a tremendous asset for the projects on which we have worked, and he would be a tremendous asset to the Obama administration.

  68. I am Burnell’s SF roommate and friend. Having known him for two years, I was impressed from the start by his professionalism, maturity, and work ethic.

I have seen him wake up at the crack of dawn to faithfully manage and update articles on “The Usual Suspects,” a prominent San Francisco political blog. I have known him to log long hours attending City Hall meetings, take weekends to volunteer and support community events, and faithfully answer work requests that come flooding into his Treo — when others of weaker disposition might choose to sleep in or give up.

Burnell’s passion is politics, and he will bring an unmatched level of commitment to the Obama administration. I am sad to see him go, but am excited at the prospect of him beginning his career on the Hill. We need more people like him in our government!

I had the pleasure of managing Burnell during his time with the Leland Yee for State Senate Campaign and working as his colleague in the CA State Assembly.

Burnell’s proved to be an incredibly fast learner and an astute organizer during his time we worked together on the Leland Yee for State Senate Campaign. He came aboard an quickly put together a comprehensive GOTV program that could easily have come from someone with years of experience. I was happy to take the lead on putting it into action.

After that Burnell and I worked in CA Assembly Speaker Pro-Tem Leland Yee’s office, where we were focused primarily on representing the Assemblyman in the San Francisco territory of the district. I watched Burnell instantly and gracefully make and strengthen connections for the office that would have taken others months or years to make. Burnell was a tirelless worker who manages his time wisely, is an excellent writer and brings his own passion to the job.

Burnell is a friend, a valued colleague, a personal advisor, and an inspiration. I dearly hope this fantastic administration improves itself that much more by employing Burnell. I will be sad to see him leave the Bay Area, but I’ll know that the country is in even better hands should he work in the Obama Administration.

From a leadership standpoint, where Burnell stands out most to me is twofold: heart, and intellectual curiosity. Burnell’s call to public service comes from an intense interest - he spends the time and energy to explore issues from multiple angles, and can hold a respectful dialogue with people on many sides of an issue. He’ll accomplish great things in public service, because his heart’s in the right place, and his motivations are clear. I’d hire him in a heartbeat.

I had the pleasure of working with Mr. Holland when he was a participant in the Fellows Program in Public Affairs with the Coro Center for Civic Leadership. As former Program Director for the Fellows Program, I am confident in my assessment of Mr. Holland’s performance in a variety of professional work environments and both structured and self-designed educational situations.

Mr. Holland’s performance as a Coro Fellow was outstanding. He was an effective contributor to his peers and used his interactions with them to both teach and learn from them. The other eleven Coro Fellows acknowledged his superb research skills, dedicated focus to tasks, analytical approach to problem solving, and commitment to serving the community. These examples serve to illustrate how Mr. Holland is able to combine theoretical knowledge with his own experience in order to enhance his own and others’ understanding.

Among the many involvements as a Coro Fellow, Mr. Holland researched best practices in innovative court systems which later were incorporated into the San Francisco Community Justice Court plan. With a team of other Coro Fellows, he helped develop a marketing plan for a professional association to better engage its membership. Mr. Holland developed a resource guide for youth programs and services in three Bay Area counties for the Early Academic Outreach Program at UC Berkeley. He presents himself articulately and persuasively in both written and oral presentations.

Since graduating from the Fellows program, Mr. Holland has updated me on his activities and accomplishments. He transformed his successful political campaign placement into a full-time job with a State legislator as a district representative. This allowed him to both broaden and deepen his relationships with the community and lead to a position with Barbary Coast Consulting, San Francisco’s formidable and fast-growing public affairs firm. Mr. Holland thrived on the opportunities to develop strategy, build coalitions, and craft convincing messages for his clients. He also grew into the role of Editor of SFUsualSuspects.com, widely regarded as the source of political insight in San Francisco.

This recommendation would fall short if it fails to impress upon you of some unique qualities and characteristics about Mr. Holland that convince me that he will have tremendous influence on social change. He is not overtly critical, rather, he demonstrates insatiable intellectual curiosity. He absorbs concepts, skills, and ideas and proactively applies them in different situations to make sense of his environment. Although he is incredibly ambitious and assertive, he demonstrates charm and humility in a way which allows people to trust him and support his initiatives. Many of these qualities are intangible and subjective. However, I have never met anyone quite like Burnell Holland who clearly models the high value he places on social responsibility and community enrichment.

Coro is proud to have Mr. Holland as an alumnus of its Fellows Program in Public Affairs. You would be making a mistake not to engage him in your endeavors to benefit the many citizens who rely on ethical and effective leaders. I have no doubt that Burnell Holland is such a potential leader.

Burnell was a mentor, a companion and remains a friend. He is professional, optimistic, determined, ambitious, which allows him to sell himself as a strong contender for any position he has determined he wants. However, what Burnie has that is a crucial differentiator is he the way he matches his skill set with a singular sense of humor that just makes you simply…like him. You want to be in a room with Burnie, you want to stick around and chuckle at his jokes, you want to be able to call him more than a colleague, a friend. Long story short, Burnie makes long hours a lot less…long. San Francisco has lost a professional and I have lost a friend to geographical distance, but I wish him all the best, and know that the next taker is very, very lucky.

    All the best Burnie!
